A Date with the Mercedes-AMG GT S

When we go invited by Hap Seng Star (Mercedes-Benz dealer in Malaysia) to come and take a closer look at the AMG GT S, we were extremely excited and quickly booked an appointment with them. Together with Mr Hachi (AE86), we visited Hap Seng Star KL Autohaus at Jalan Sultan Ismail and spend some time with the super car.

It was love at first sight when we saw the car parked gracefully in the garage, meet the Mercedes-AMG GT S.

The AMG GT S was introduced in year 2014 as the second variation after AMG GT, and it's the top-of-the-line sports car model you can find in the Mercedes-Benz family.

This 2-seater 2-door coupe has a front mid-engine layout with rear wheel drive.

The long bonnet with short rear end is a significant trademark styling of the company which has been passed down from the classic 300 SL to SLR McLaren and SLS AMG.

Under the long bonnet fits a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch sports transmission outputting 503hp and 650Nm of torque with a top speed of 310km/h!

Despite everything being covered up in the engine bay, you can still get a sneak peak at the twin-turbo just below the top deck.

We have to thank Jacqueline Ayasse for hand-building this specific piece of engine at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Starting the V8 up was a new experience for us too. It wasn't as loud as the other supercars you know out there, but it has that soft yet fierce growling that quite resembles the American V8 muscle cars.

The interior is upholstered with premium quality Nappa leather and DINAMICA microfiber, and a little bit of bling-bling inside are there to remind you it's a comfortable racing performance machine you're driving in.

Honestly, inside the AMG GT S you can never complain about anything. It has everything you need like the auto seat adjustments, climate control, cup holders, ...

... an 8.4-inch screen that helps you with the reverse camera (notice Mr Hachi at the back), ...

... and AMG DRIVE UNIT with AMG DYNAMIC SELECT controller on the centre console that allows the driver to enjoy driving in various presets available: 'Comfort', 'Sport' and 'Sport Plus'.

Those settings mentioned previously fiddles with the suspension and damper characteristics automatically with the push of a button. Not only that, it alters the sound of your exhaust too. Top class stuff.

When I sat in it and drove around the busy streets of KL, I felt the car was absurdly long and wide as it almost hogs the whole width of the road, but it didn't take long for me to get use to the bulkiness of it.

The response of the engine was so direct and so smooth whenever I hit on the accelerator pedal, bringing it up to 6,000 rpm (redline at 7,000) before shifting my gear on the flappy pedal.

The best part of the car apart from its classy look is, the grumbling noise it makes when you drop a gear in 'Sport Plus' mode.  When you want it to be race car, it will be one! How come my AE86 doesn't make that sound. XD

Thank you Mr Adrian Wong, the Product Expert of Mercedes-Benz at Hap Seng Star KL for spending some time describing those cool high-tech gizmos to us. We learnt so much about the AMG GT S.

Hap Seng Star KL at Jalan Sultan Ismail will be having a test drive session for all of their new range Mercedes-Benz models including the C63 Coupe, CLA 45, GLA 45, and also the AMG GT S, feel free to visit them on the 10th to 12th March 2017 and let them know you know about this through our site!.

Thank you again Hap Seng Star KL for the opportunity and look forward to all the great products from Mercedes-Benz.
